How To Choose An Insect Repellent

By Roger Cole

Engaging in outdoor activities is fun during summer when the weather is warm. Summer is not a good time for humans only, insects, especially, flies, ticks, and mosquitoes enjoy the warm weather. A single bite from a mosquito or tick can lead to various health complications. Therefore, it is necessary to take preventive measures. Applying insect repellent is one of the most effective preventive methods.

The market is filled with a variety of repellents designed for different individuals. Read labels to find out the type of ingredients used in various repellents. Some contain synthetic chemicals, others are manufactured from plant extracts. Read the instructions carefully to find out how different ingredients react on the skin. Most repellents are not suitable for children under three months. Make sure the product is suitable for you and your family to avoid health complications.

The desire of consumers is to have full-time protection against bugs. Unfortunately, repellents last for few hours depending on concentration levels. To experience protection for one or two hours, you need to apply repellents with high concentration volumes of chemicals or organic repelling substances. Low concentrated products are fit when you are not engaging in physical activities. The repelling effect tends to last one to one and a half hours.

Bug repellents cause irritation when applied to the skin, areas near eyes, nose, and ears. If you are using spray repellents, apply on your hands and rub gently in the face. Spraying repellents on your face will cause irritation to the eyes and nose. Parents are advised to keep repellents out of reach of children. This is because children may apply bug repelling products on hands, eyes, and mouth causing irritation.

It is crucial to know the type of ingredients you are allergic to. This helps you choose between organic and chemical based insect repelling products. In most cases, consumers choose organic products because the level of irritation is low. However, they provide protection for few minutes. This means that you must reapply the product to experience effective results. Review the side effects experienced due to excessive use of repellents. Understanding how these products work is important to ensure your family is safe.

The needs of consumers vary in many ways. This factor has led to high demand for different repelling products. A group of consumers invests in products designed to prevent tick bites, while another will buy mosquito repellents. It is your responsibility to determine the type of product that suits your needs. Review product details to ensure you purchase a product designed for your specific need.

Buying repellents combined with sunscreen is not a good idea. The effectiveness of both products reduces when mixed. Apply sunscreen during the day when the sun is hot. Mosquitoes are not active during this time of the day. Repellents come in handy at night when mosquitoes are active.

Repellents provide excellent results if applied according to manufacturer guidelines. To achieve better results you must use other preventive options. Stay away from areas infested with mosquitoes. If you are in an area with many ticks, wear tight clothing. Make sure to put on long sleeves, long pants, socks, and boots. The long pants should be tucked to prevent ticks from crawling up your legs.
